45 years of Creek.
In 1982 a 4040 amplifier set the marque on its course. In March 2027 it turns forty five, and it does so as part of Step Deeper.

Creek Audio was founded in North London in 1982 by Mike Creek, on a belief that still reads as mildly subversive: a serious amplifier should not cost serious money. The 4040 that launched the company became one of the defining budget Hi-Fi products of its decade, and the 3040 tuner beside it in the photograph above completed the first system. Neither pretended to be anything other than what it was, which was most of the point.
The instinct ran in the family. Mike’s father had founded Wyndsor Recordings in 1952 and built what was probably Britain’s first mini system along the way. Three generations on, the thread is unbroken: Mike’s son Luke joined Creek at nineteen, worked every job in the company, and went on to lead product at Bowers & Wilkins before founding Step Deeper. In 2026 the Creek brand came into Step Deeper, and this is where its forty fifth anniversary will be marked, in March 2027.
Why we took it on.
Step Deeper exists to build the next generation of audiophile hardware, and it would have been easier, in some ways, to start with a clean name. We chose a forty four year old one because of what it stands for. Creek’s discipline has always been reduction: take out everything in the signal path that is not carrying the music, then listen hard to what is left. Every change has to be heard, compared and argued over before it is allowed to stay. That is slower than it sounds, and it is exactly the way we want to work.
Painters leave small errors in a picture on purpose, because perfection bores the eye.
An engineer who helped shape Creek’s sound said that, and it is the paradox at the heart of the craft. Nobody has heard the original performance, so every piece of Hi-Fi is a judgement call, and a system that measures perfectly can still sound dead. For Creek, and now for us, the measurements only say when the listening should begin.
What stays the same.
Creek remains London based and family led, and the Cymatics loudspeakers are the current expression of that forty year habit of listening, one change at a time, until a system moves you whatever is playing. There are plans afoot for the anniversary year that we look forward to sharing when they are ready. For now, the thing to know is simpler than any plan: everything that carries the Creek name is judged on whether it creates an emotional response in the person listening. It was true in 1982. It is the reason the brand is here.
